Introduction
Following the 2002 source code release by Volition, the community-based FreeSpace 2 Source Code Project (SCP) was formed to continue improving and adding new features to FreeSpace 2. The result is FreeSpace Open, which significantly expands the modding capabilities of the engine as well as providing multi-platform support and greatly improved graphics.
As of the 19.0 release, PXO support has been added to FreeSpace Open replacing the old FSNet (FS2NetD) service. Although most mods released for FreeSpace Open do not include multiplayer support, PXO attempts to support any mod or total conversion which does.
Availability
Although FreeSpace Open is freely available, as are an ever growing list of mods, for most mods a full version of FreeSpace 2 is still required. However, some total conversions do not require the any data from FreeSpace 2 and as such are available entirely for free.
Knossos is an installer and launcher for FreeSpace Open which makes it easy to install FreeSpace Open, the original FreeSpace 2 data files, as well as the many mods that are available. Please see the following guide for help getting started with Knossos and FreeSpace Open:
